Super Bowl, Super Villains, First Timers and E-Commerce from the TV

Written by AMA Rochester | Jan 15, 2014 2:00:06 PM

With the teams still being decided for this year’s February 2nd Super Bowl, advertisers are busy getting ready for the big day by showcasing their brands, new products and public relations fodder. The big game day should be filled with a lot of entertainment, both during the game play and during the commercial breaks, even if you can’t find any Velveeta for the queso dip.

Jaguar has just released a teaser spot for its first foray into the Super Bowl slots with a super villain themed ad, microsite BritishVillains.com and a blog site based on the tagline “Good to be Bad.” The ambitious spot for the Indian-based auto manufacturer will tout its newest model, the F-Type coupe. The blog has several interesting tongue-in-cheek style articles like “Four Devious Female Archetypes in Film (And How to Act Like Them)” and “A Guide to World Domination in 2014.”

In addition to Jaguar, there will be a lot of first-timers on the docket. Tune in to see Butterfinger introduce Butterfinger Peanut Butter Cups, Cheerios has got some skin in the game, Chobani is promoting 100-calories, Heinz is jumping into the mix and website design firm Squarespace is one of the smaller brands to be in the line-up this year. In fact, Squarespace has done its commercial in-house. I can’t wait to see how they stack up to the big powerhouse produced campaigns, and at $4 million for each 30-second spots, I admire their ambition.

New this year will be H&M’s e-commerce capabilities. The fashion retailer will be debuting a feature which will allow owners of certain Samsung Smart TVs to purchase David Beckham Bodywear items. The technology was demonstrated at the CES show in Las Vegas. It is an interesting concept, but with the small audience owning televisions with the ability to carryout the transaction won’t have enough numbers to convince us whether it is a success.

I’ll be live tweeting (@brand_gal) throughout the Super Bowl with commentary on the commercials as they happen – so follow me to join in on the conversation! And don’t forget the AMA | Rochester’s Super Bowl Ad Review at the Burgundy Basin on February 4th at 4 p.m.! The event always brings in a great crowd, and there is plenty of conversations about what worked, what didn’t and why.
